The gradual development of facial wrinkles, whether fine surface lines or deeper creases and folds, is the classic early sign of accumulated skin damage and inevitable ageing. Wrinkles are caused by many factors including sun exposure, smoking, de-hydration and contracting of the muscles. There are options available to prevent wrinkles from forming or deepening as well as various options available to correct, reduce and soften wrinkles that have already formed.

Treatment Basics using Focal Injections

What is our injectable wrinkle treatment and how does it work? Let’s review the basics:

  • It is made with a purified form of botulinum toxin.
  • When injected, this product temporarily blocks the nerve impulses to the facial muscles that contract to cause wrinkles.
  • When these muscles are relaxed, the skin can lay smooth and wrinkles are reduced, restoring a more youthful look.

At CosMedics we may recommend the use of cosmetic injections for the treatment of frown lines, crows feet or other areas of concern.

It is important to understand the product risk information. Focal injections are contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any botulinum toxin type A, or to any ingredient in the formulation or component of the container. For a complete list of risks talk to your doctor. Tell your doctor if you are taking any medications including prescription, or those bought at a supermarket or health food stores.

Focal Injections should not be used of you are allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients, if you have an infection in the muscles where it would normally be injected,or if you have any muscle disorders in the other parts of your body.

Some people choose to combine wrinkle smoothing treatments with injectable filler. This combined procedure also addresses facial folds or creases and adds volume for more comprehensive rejuvenation.

Basics using Other Treatments

The effectiveness of anti-wrinkle creams depends in part on the active ingredient or ingredients. Listed above are some common ingredients that may result in slight to modest improvement in the appearance of wrinkles. Topical creams may soften or reduce your appearance of wrinkles, however we recommend to protect your skin from the sun with a topical SPF to help delay the appearance or severity.

Laser or light source wrinkle treatments uses powerful laser technology to renew the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin production. Laser wrinkle removal is also approved to treat fine lines and wrinkles. Six treatments are traditionally recommended in order to receive the desired results, and we also recommend you pair these treatments with cosmetic injectables, Microdermabrasion, or Chemical Peels.

Face lift or surgery

While surgical treatments are an option for sagging skin, it will not address skin quality. Other modalities may be beneficial before a surgical procedure is considered such as lasers, chemical peels, focal injections, facial fillers and microdermabrasion. If you are considering a surgical treatment it is advised to talk to your doctor.

While results are visible,  injections will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve had “work done.” The muscle activity that causes lines is temporarily reduced and softened. You will still be able to frown and look surprised without the wrinkles and creases that may otherwise make you look angry or tired*.

Whether injectables are being used in a cosmetic application to treat fine lines and wrinkles, or in a therapeutic application to treat chronic migraines, TMJ syndrome or hyperhidrosis, the entire procedure takes approximately 10-15 minutes. Most patients are in and out of our clinic quickly and without downtime.

Before and after care

Preparing for treatment

To minimize the risks of bruising, it is recommended that you:

  1. Avoid Aspirin, Advil or any anti-inflammatory medication during the week prior to injection; this may increase the risk of bruising or bleeding at the injection site. If possible, discontinue these medications at least 3 days (preferably 1 week) before the treatment. Do not discontinue these medications without consulting with your physician if they are medically necessary.
  2. Avoid green teas or herbal supplements, ex., flax or fish oils, multi-vitamins and red wine.
  3. One day prior you may start using Arnica, which is a herbal supplement that minimizes bruising. This is available at our front desk.

Care after injections

Do not manipulate or massage the treated area for 4 hours after treatment. It is recommended to “work” the muscles in the area that was treated (frown, squint, raise eyebrows, etc.) as much as possible for 15 minutes after treatment. Do not participate in strenuous activity for 4 hours after treatment. It is recommended that you do not lie down for 2 hours after treatment so that the product may distribute evenly.

As individual patients respond differently depending upon their musculature, it is recommended to return for a follow-up visit with Dr. Singh 10-14 days from the treatment date.

Risks and common side effects

Redness, bruising or slight swelling of the treatment area may occur following your injections. These side effects typically resolve within 30 minutes of treatment. You should avoid touching or massaging the area of the affected skin for about an hour after treatment.

Some injections are not recommended if you are pregnant or nursing. It is also not recommended for patients that may have an underlying significant neurological or muscular disease.
